Development: First Draft

For my first draft I wanted to go down the road of old fashioned and give the feeling that this book has been lost and has grown old over time. So first I decided to make the background which was coffee stained paper, which I scanned in to the computer. Also for the front cover I took a photo of a leather bag and then uploaded it and worked with it in photoshop.

What you see above is all the pages for my first draft. When I showed this to Miss Stower she did not think that it worked and did not like it. The pages were to separated from each other and they needed to be thought of as being one page and cut into the two pages that I needed. Also Miss Stower thought that they should be more graphic, layer, shape, different background, elements to my work. Furthermore she thought that I should pull the creatures into the 21th century, "What would the creatures be like today?" Here is the idea that Miss Stower showed me to inspire me on how to change my piece of work.

Development: Drawings

As I have said in my other post my inspiration for my drawings was Leonardo Da Vinci because I am not a great artist however doing my drawings in Leonardo Da Vinci style means that I don't have to be the worlds best artist, I just have to draw something that you can make out.

I started out drawing the whole creature however I quickly found out that it was difficult to draw the full character but more over, it did not give the look or feel the I desired. So I then decided to only do part of the creature, two or three parts for each creature and only the key part e.g. the face or the foot.

For this I have learned that you don't need to see all of the creature or object to get an impression or look of the object. Also I learned that I did not have to be so neat and clean with my drawings and that the rough and sketchy quality really works for me.

Development: Mood Boreds

Before I started to make my first draft I needed to get a better understanding of how other artists have produced the Greek Monsters. So I decided to make a mood board for each monster. See Below for all mood boards.

For my mood boards I learned that some creatures like the Cerberus (3 headed dog) are very similar and that there are somethings that you need to keep the same, such as the anger in the dogs' face. So this has really given me an idea of how I wanted my creatures to look.

Design of Final Piece

Here is my final design for my piece, it will be a digital rendered book from start to finish. The drawings and construction of the book will be made digitally. However, the only thing that will not be digitally rendered is the front cover and paper which I will make and then photograph.
So my final piece will be a book which will be made on the computer and is in the style of Leonardo Da Vinci and on the theme of Greek Myths and Monsters.

Outline of Initial Ideas

My initial idea is based on the boat that I chose from my trip to Pitt Rivers and then developed in to the idea of dreams and adventure, from that I developed my idea by, mind mapping ideas and thoughts to come up with the idea of Greek Myths and Monsters.

I like the idea of Greek Myths and Monsters because they are very different stories to the modern day. Also I have a fondness for the idea behind and the concept of animals and/or creatures that have been made up and created in a persons imagination and have never been seen. Moreover I love the look and design of the monsters in Greek myths, they really are different and unusual to the idea of an animal or the idea of a classic monster.

I would like to make one piece of work which is physical (you can touch and feel it) and make another piece of work which is visual (you can hear and see it). My idea so far is to make a book, which is very old fashioned and different from a normal book being bound and fixed with a set number of pages. I would like to make a book with images along with the story and have them come to life on the computer.

Exploring Key Concept

I have decided to explore the idea of an adventure in a dream. I came to this idea by making a mind map for the word memories (click here to see mind map) and then relating the key words from the mind map back in to the chosen object, Salama the boat from Pitt Rivers.

The reason behind choosing the key concept of dreams and adventure is that the boat was hanging in the air, so you could see it from a different angle, which is not often seen for a boat because the boat is normally in water. The idea for adventure came from the boat's journey around the world, going to new and never been seen before places to deliver cargo.

After exploring my key concept, I have come to the idea of Greek Myths and Monsters. I came to this idea by making another mind map on the idea of dreams and adventure. To get to the idea of Greek Myths and Monsters I went from Dreams to Nightmares to Monsters them to Myths and finally to Greek. (for mind map see below)

I feel that this is a good idea because it for one interested me and for another it is not the obvious choice to make for Salama the boat. What I have to do now, is to research Greek Myths and Monsters and also think about how I am going to display it.
